Brasilia, May 26, 2024 - Brazil's Debt Increases: Current Account Deficit soars: Brazil's external accounts registered a negative balance of US$ 2.5 billion in April, according to data released on Friday (24) by the Bank Central Bank (Central Bank). The result represents an increase compared to the same month in 2023, when the deficit was US$ 247 million.
O resultado ficou acima da expectativa de especialistas consultados pela Reuters, que projetavam um saldo negativo de US$ 1,05 bilhão para o mês. No acumulado em 12 meses, o déficit em transações correntes totaliza o equivalente a 1,57% do Produto Interno Bruto (PIB).
Despite the negative current account balance, the Central Bank points out that the investments Direct investment in the country reached US$ 3.867 billion in April, an increase of 26% compared to the same month last year. The result was below the US$ 4.873 billion projected in the Reuters poll.
Other relevant information:
- The deficit in the services account, which includes international travel, transportation, equipment rental and insurance, among others, totaled US$ 3.985 billion in April, compared to US$ 3.142 billion in the same month of 2023, an increase of 26.9%.
- Exports of goods totaled US$ 23.988 billion in April, down 2.1% on the same month last year. Imports totaled US$ 26.573 billion, an increase of 12.2% in the same comparison.
