Magda Chambriard highlights state-owned company's ability to generate returns for investors
The international oil market also played a significant role, with the price of oil rising by more than 1% due to worsening geopolitical tensions and expectations of a reduction in global production.
The preferred shares of Petrobras (PETR4) ended the day with an advance of 2.13%, trading at R$ 37.80, while the ordinary shares (PETR3) rose 1.76%, reaching R$ 39.38. During the trading session, the shares even registered an increase of more than 2.5%, reflecting the optimism of the markets.
However, the solid performance of Petrobras shares was not enough to prevent a fall of almost 0.6% on the Ibovespa, which closed at 123,779 points, reaching its lowest level since November last year.
The company's movement was boosted by the predictable statements of the new CEO, who said that the state-owned company will be “perfectly” capable of generating a return for investors. Magda also stressed the company's plans for profitability through investments in refining, not ruling out the possibility of acquiring privatized plants.
“Refining adds value. We are interested as a value agent. Esso recently made a profit from investments in refining. We're following the same logic. If there's a profit, we want it,” he said.
In her first press conference after taking office, the new president of Petrobras openly defended the expansion of refining capacity in Brazil.
“We're going to refine to add value. Historically, that's what happens. There are those who say they will no longer invest in refining. Each case is different,” he explained. “We're not going to refine to lose money. We're going to refine to add value.”.
Geopolitical tensions also contributed to the rise
The increase in Petrobras shares was also influenced by the global scenario, with the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil rising by 1.26% on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), reaching US$ 83.94.
Israel's recent attack on the town of Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, continues to have repercussions on the markets, with international criticism of the offensive. In this context, Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognized on Tuesday the State of Palestine in the borders prior to the Six Day War in 1967, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
In addition, ING predicts that OPEC+ will extend the production cuts in force at the next meeting on Sunday. “There is a risk that OPEC+ will excessively restrict the market in the third quarter of this year,” it warned.
